Civic examination

  • 15 participants max.
  • 15 rue Montmartre, 75001 Paris

What is the Civic Exam?

The Civic Examination is an official assessment of candidates’ knowledge of the values and principles of the French Republic, their rights and duties in France, and the workings of the country’s institutions.

Since January 1, 2026, passing this exam has been mandatory for :

  • Applying for a multi-annual residence permit
  • Applying for a residence permit
  • An application for French naturalization

The exam is designed by the French Ministry of the Interior and organized in approved centers.

Exam format

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Number of questions: 40 (MCQs) including 28 questions (knowledge questions) and 12 questions (situational questions)

There are different levels of difficulty depending on the residence permit concerned (CSP or CR).

  • Score required: 80% correct answers (32/40)
  • Support: digital exam on tablet or computer
  • Validity of results: The certificate of passing the exam has no validity period.

  • The values and principles of the French Republic
  • The rights and duties of people living in France
  • Institutional and political functioning in France
  • French history, geography and culture
  • Living it up in French society

Preparing for the exam

To help you prepare, the Ministry of the Interior has made available free of charge the official list of knowledge questions for CSP and CR.

We also offer a 3h30 civics exam preparation course to help you prepare for the exam more easily. You can register for the course when you register for the exam.

Results

Results are available 48 hours after the examination.

A certificate of achievement is issued by email for administrative purposes.

A certificate of successful completion of the civic examination is not required for the renewal of a multi-annual residence permit or a residence permit previously obtained.

This course is designed for students who are beginners. It aims to develop communicative competence to enable students to make themselves understood and to understand in very simple everyday situations.
